Cemeteries in Riga

There are approximately 20 burial sites in Riga. There are two open cemeteries, which provide space for new burials.

There are also several cemeteries in Riga with restricted access—that is, cemeteries that only permit reburials into an existing relative's grave, either with a casket in the ground or with an urn.

There are five closed cemeteries, where only an urn containing ashes can be reburialed into an existing grave of a family member of the deceased. The right to burial is granted to Latvian citizens registered in Riga.

Burial can be carried out in newly available plots or near already buried relatives, allowing families to maintain traditions and remain together even after death.

Obtaining a Cemetery Plot

  • According to legislation, plots for single and double burials of 3 square meters and 4 square meters, respectively, are allocated free of charge.

Reburials of relatives in urns or coffins are permitted in existing family plots. When burying in a coffin, a sanitary interval of at least 20 years must be observed since the previous funeral.
