The cremation process involves preparing the body of the deceased, purchasing a casket, and purchasing the necessary accessories. The package of documents must include: a medical report on the cause of death; a death certificate; a cremation application; and the passport or ID card of the person responsible for the funeral. If a third party unrelated to the deceased, such as a funeral director, is organizing the cremation, a notarized power of attorney is required. If the death was not due to natural causes, or if violent death is suspected, permission for cremation will need to be obtained from the police, the prosecutor's office, or a forensic medical examiner.
Ashes are released based on the documents submitted for cremation. This process can be completed on the day of cremation or within the following three days. Ashes can be stored free of charge for the first 45 days. After this period, a storage fee for the urn will be charged. If there are no relatives present, ashes can be buried in a special plot for unclaimed ashes or scattered in approved locations.
After cremation, the ashes are placed in a special capsule and urn for burial. In Riga, burial of ashes in the ground or placement in specially designated areas is possible.
Scattering ashes is permitted by law, but this practice is not used in Christian funeral ceremonies.
