Can a Funeral Be Paid from the Deceased's Bank Account in Latvia?

The short answer: once the bank is informed of the death it freezes the account, and money is released to the heirs only against the inheritance certificate issued by a sworn notary. As an exception, however, the bank may make a one-off payment to close relatives specifically for funeral expenses. Why the account cannot simply be used by the family

From the moment of death the funds in the account become part of the estate, so they no longer belong to the spouse or the children until the inheritance case has been settled. Withdrawing money with the deceased's card — even for the funeral — means dealing with property that is not yours: it leads to disputes between heirs and, in some cases, to liability before the law. What to ask the bank and which documents to collect

A one-off payment for funeral expenses can usually be requested by close relatives — parents, children, the spouse. Prepare:

1. the death certificate;
2. your own identity document;
3. documents proving kinship or marriage;
4. the funeral service estimate or invoice showing the amount.

Note: the law does not oblige a bank to make such an exception, so the answer and the amount differ from bank to bank — it is worth asking your own bank in the first days.
