A funeral ceremony in Riga normally includes several connected stages: the farewell, the transfer to the hearse, travel to a cemetery or crematorium, and the final committal. The time, route and responsibilities are agreed in advance so that the family is not left to manage logistics on the day.
The first decision is the farewell venue: a farewell hall, church or another suitable room. Capacity, access times, the officiant and musicians all need to be coordinated.
Before fixing the hour, the paperwork, preparation of the deceased and transport schedule are checked. For a burial, the cemetery appointment and readiness of the grave are also confirmed.
The farewell itself usually lasts 30 to 60 minutes. Music may be played, an officiant or clergy member speaks, and relatives place flowers. The programme can be brief or more personal according to the family’s wishes.
After the farewell, the coffin is carried to the hearse. The number of bearers, route through the building and handling of flowers are planned beforehand to avoid haste.
