Clothing for the Deceased: What to Choose in Latvia

Clothing for the deceased should reflect the person’s usual style, family traditions and the form of the farewell. There is no single compulsory set, but garments should be clean, suitably sized and practical for preparation. The chosen morgue can confirm its exact requirements.

What is usually prepared

For a man, families often provide a suit or trousers and shirt, underwear, socks and light shoes. For a woman, a dress, suit or blouse with a skirt or trousers is common, together with underwear, hosiery and shoes.

Black is not mandatory. Clothing that was characteristic of the person can be appropriate when it is respectful and comfortable for preparation.

Size, fabric and fastenings

Body dimensions may change after death, so tightly fitted garments may not be suitable. A slightly larger size, flexible fabric and simple fastenings are usually more practical.

Rigid collars, corsets and many metal fittings can complicate preparation. For cremation, ask the crematorium about restrictions on materials and personal items.

Delivering clothes to the morgue

Pack the complete set in a separate clean bag with any agreed accessories. Jewellery or valuable personal objects should only be delivered after clear confirmation and recording.

Call before travelling, as reception hours and rules differ. The bag may be labelled with the deceased’s name and a family contact, but documents and valuables should not be left without confirmation.

When suitable clothing is unavailable

A funeral service can supply a complete set or individual garments. This can help when relatives are abroad or the required size is not available.

We agree the contents and price with the family and deliver the set together with other funeral goods. The cost is confirmed before ordering.

Checklist before delivery

  • underwear, socks or hosiery;
  • shirt, blouse, dress, suit or another chosen outfit;
  • loose, easy-to-fit shoes;
  • only personal accessories agreed in advance;
  • a clean bag and confirmation of the morgue’s rules.
