Funeral Service in Riga

A funeral service is an important ritual in the Orthodox tradition performed over the deceased. This rite seeks to forgive all sins for which the person repented before death. Previously, this service was not performed for individuals convicted of robbery or murder, for the purpose of spiritual retribution in the afterlife.

How long does the funeral service last and what is needed for it?

Necessary elements for the ceremony:

  • A prayer of absolution, which is placed in the hands of the deceased.
  • A cross worn by the deceased.
  • A crown with a text from the Bible on the forehead, which relatives kiss during the farewell.
  • A selected image of the saint, the patron saint of the deceased, placed inside the coffin - usually an icon of St. Nicholas for men and the Blessed Virgin Mary for women.
  • Candles, which are given to all participants and lit at the beginning of the ceremony.

It is important for relatives to understand when the funeral will take place. A funeral service is a great way to properly plan your funeral. In churches, the service typically lasts 40 to 50 minutes, while at an outdoor ceremony it can be shorter – 15 to 20 minutes.

Preparing for the Funeral Ceremony in Riga

Before the ceremony, the coffin is brought into the church open, the necessary attributes are laid out, candles are lit, and the priest reads the appropriate prayers and troparia. The ceremony concludes with a final farewell, as participants pass by the open coffin. The final stage is covering the deceased's face with a shroud and closing the coffin lid.

If the ceremony is held outside of a church, the arrival of the officiant and the details of the time and location are coordinated. The use of candles may be optional.

For whom a funeral service is not performed

There are certain categories of individuals for whom a funeral service is not provided:

  • Active opponents of the Christian faith and anti-religious activists;
  • Agnostics and atheists who deny the existence of higher powers;
  • Unbaptized persons or those baptized in a manner not consistent with the Orthodox rite;
  • Individuals who committed suicide while still sane.

However, if the deceased is insane, a funeral service may still be performed with the blessing of the bishop.

Requirements for an Absentee Funeral Service

Absentee funeral services are permitted when the body of the deceased is inaccessible, which often occurs after air crashes, military actions, or terrorist attacks. In such cases, prayers are said over the earth, which is subsequently buried in the family grave or at the intended location of the remains.

It is important to remember that the restrictions applicable to direct funeral services also apply to absentee funeral services.

A distinction should be made between funeral services at home and absentee funeral services. In the Russian Orthodox Church, this practice may be considered a special exception, depending on the circumstances of the death.
