According to the law, every resident has the right to a free burial in the Riga city cemetery upon their first request for a death.
Every deceased person has the right to a dignified funeral. By law, every resident of Riga is provided with a cemetery plot. Burial is free for first burials in open (public) cemeteries, with only additional services such as grave preparation or coffin transport being charged.
Riga has three open cemeteries offering new burial sites for coffins. These are Jaunciema, Katlakalns, and Bolderaja Cemeteries. Coffin burials in existing graves are also available, subject to the sanitary period (20-25 years). In addition, Tornakalns Cemetery, Tornakalns Orthodox Cemetery, Martina Cemetery, Kapsiles Cemetery, Sarkandaugavas Cemetery, and Cemetery on Čekhova Street are not suitable for in-ground burials. Only urn burials in existing relatives' graves are possible. The sanitary period for urn burials does not apply.
The new plots offer 3 square meters of space for one burial and 4 square meters for two, as well as a 12 square meter plot for a family burial or the construction of a crypt. m.

After submitting all required documents, an agreement for unlimited use of the land plot is signed with the cemetery administration. Usually, burial matters are resolved after this. You will only need to pay the funeral services.
