Catholic Funerals in Riga

Catholic funerals are based on the belief in the resurrection of the body and eternal life. Rituals performed before and after death are aimed at spiritual purification and preparing the deceased for eternity.

Traditions and Features of Catholic Funerals

Important aspects of the Catholic funeral tradition include confession, communion, anointing, prayers at the casket, requiem Mass in the church, and Christian burial. Prayers in memory of the deceased are said on the third, seventh, and thirtieth days after death. Grave digging is regulated by church rules and customs.

Modern conditions sometimes require adjustments to the rituals. In cases where death occurs suddenly and there is no time for traditional rites, or when the circumstances of the death require immediate delivery of the body to the morgue, the clergy strive to perform all necessary rituals as much as possible.

The timing of a Catholic funeral is determined based on specific circumstances, and the three-day burial rule may not be observed.

Attributes and rituals of a Catholic farewell

Catholic funeral traditions include washing, vesting, placement in a casket, prayer services, a funeral Mass, burial, and subsequent remembrance.

Necessary items for Catholic funeral Masses and rites include:

  • A pectoral cross for wearing on the body of the deceased.
  • A cross for holding in the hands of the deceased, as well as possible additions such as rosary beads or a baptismal candle.
  • A small image of Jesus Christ or the Mother of God, which is placed on the cross held by the deceased.
  • Flowers, which are placed on the coffin and thrown into the grave before it is filled.

How a Catholic Funeral Is Conducted

Catholic rituals are aimed at the spiritual cleansing and peace of the deceased. According to Catholic tradition, the following burial order exists:

On the eve of death, a Catholic must confess and receive Last Communion. Anointing with oil is also performed to atone for sins.

The deceased is washed and dressed in formal, dark-colored clothing; a white dress is chosen for young women and girls. The deceased must wear a pectoral cross; any jewelry other than a wedding ring is prohibited.

A cross is placed in the deceased's hands, and sometimes a rosary or baptismal candle is added. An icon is placed over the body: an icon of Jesus Christ for men or the Virgin Mary for women.

A crucifix is placed in the room with the coffin, and a candle is lit, while those gathered recite prayers. In the past, a vigil without sleep was practiced, but this is now rare.

Before the burial, a funeral Mass is held with funeral paraphernalia prepared.

Traditionally, the deceased is remembered on the third, seventh, thirtieth, and fortieth days after death, with an invitation to Mass in church.

The anniversary of death is celebrated by ordering a Mass on November 2nd – All Souls' Day.
