What to Wear to a Funeral in Latvia: Dress Etiquette

How to dress for a funeral in Latvia: accepted colours, outfits for men, women and children, what to note in church, at the cemetery and at the crematorium. A short etiquette guide for guests.

An invitation to a funeral always comes unexpectedly, and one of the first practical questions is clothing: what counts as respectful, what is too casual, and is black obligatory? This article sums up the accepted funeral dress code in Latvia — for men, women and children, in summer and winter, at church, at the cemetery and at the crematorium.

The main principle is simple: clothing should be dark, calm and unobtrusive. A funeral is not a place to stand out — your outfit expresses respect for the departed and their family. If you are unsure about a specific occasion, call +371 2944 9849 — we will tell you what format to expect at that ceremony.

The basics: colours and style

  • Colours — black, dark grey, navy, dark brown. A fully black outfit is nowadays expected only of the closest family; for guests, dark muted tones are enough;
  • style — business-like or quietly formal: no bright prints, slogans, sparkle or sportswear;
  • shoes — closed, clean, comfortable: at the cemetery you will stand and walk on grass or gravel;
  • accessories — minimal: discreet jewellery, a dark bag; sunglasses are fine outdoors but are removed inside.

What to wear: men, women, children

WhoRecommended outfitWhat to avoid
MenA dark suit, or dark trousers with a shirt; a tie is optional but appropriate in quiet tonesDistressed jeans, shorts, trainers, bright shirts
WomenA dark dress or knee-length (or longer) skirt, or a trouser suit; shoulders covered, neckline modestShort skirts, bare shoulders, flashy details, loud heels
ChildrenClean, calm everyday clothes in darker tones — black is not expected of childrenCartoon prints, bright colours, noisy toys

For a winter funeral, remember that part of the ceremony takes place outdoors at the cemetery — a warm dark coat, gloves and closed winter shoes are wiser than a formal but thin outfit. In summer choose breathable fabrics, but not beachwear — shoulders and knees stay covered even in the heat.

Church, cemetery, crematorium: the details

  • In church — men remove headwear; in an Orthodox church women traditionally cover their heads with a scarf;
  • at the cemetery — practicality is part of respect: sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing let you stand through the whole ceremony calmly;
  • at the crematorium and farewell hall — it is warmer indoors, so coats are usually taken off; the format is the same as in church — quiet and restrained. How the farewell in a hall unfolds is described in “How farewell ceremonies take place in a funeral home in Riga”.

What else to bring

Besides clothing, a guest should think of three things:

  • flowers — at Latvian funerals flowers are brought in even numbers; which flowers to choose and what the colours mean is covered in “What flowers are traditionally brought to funerals in Latvia”;
  • words of condolence — short and heartfelt; leave long speeches to the celebrant;
  • an umbrella and spare time — arrive 15–20 minutes before the start; being late to a funeral is a bigger breach of etiquette than the wrong tie colour.
