Agreeing the Funeral Date and Burial Plot in Riga

Two questions come first in any funeral arrangement: the date and the place — when the farewell will happen and where your loved one will be buried. Everything else depends on these two decisions: the morgue release time, the priest or celebrant, transport, flowers and the reception booking. This article explains who is involved in the process in Riga, in what order, and which documents are needed.

Who the funeral date is agreed with

The funeral date is not only the family's choice — it has to be aligned with several parties' schedules:

In practice, a funeral service specialist brings all five together within one or two rounds of calls: they know how the cemeteries and morgues operate and can see immediately which time is realistic. How the burial plot is agreed

There are two paths in Riga — a new plot or burial in a family grave:

• A new plot. The plot is allocated by the cemetery administration under municipal rules. The family may view the proposed plot before deciding; availability varies between cemeteries. • A family grave. If the family already has a grave, you will need the documents confirming the right to use it and proof of kinship with those buried there. Coffin burial on top of an existing grave is possible after a set sanitary period; urn burial usually has no such restrictions. More in “How to arrange a family burial plot in Riga”.

To agree the plot, the cemetery administration needs the death certificate and the applicant's ID; for a family grave — also the grave documents. Options when time is tight

If relatives can only come on a specific day, or the nearest slots at the chosen cemetery are taken, there are two flexible solutions:

• Funeral with cremation — the farewell ceremony is held within days, while the urn burial is scheduled later, when the family can gather;
