A civil farewell ceremony suits a family that does not want a religious rite or wishes to focus the service on the person's life. It does not have to feel impersonal: a thoughtful programme, music and words from relatives create a calm and dignified farewell.

How a civil ceremony is different

A religious funeral centres on an established rite and a member of the clergy, while a civil ceremony is designed individually. It may be led by a professional ceremony leader, a family representative or another chosen person. The text can include a biography, family memories and words of gratitude.

There are no compulsory prayers or religious symbols. If the family wishes, individual traditions can remain — a moment of silence, the laying of flowers or one spiritual piece of music.

Building the ceremony programme
