Tornakalns and Tornakalns Orthodox Cemeteries in Riga

Tornakalns Cemetery is divided into two sections: one located at Torņakalna Street 1, dating back to 1777, and the other, the Orthodox cemetery at Vienības Gatve 76b, founded in 1861.

The combined area of the cemeteries is 5.5 hectares. Three different sections of the Orthodox cemetery contain the mass graves of approximately 3,000 Soviet soldiers who died during World War II. The Orthodox cemetery's bell tower, built in the 18th century, is an architectural landmark of national significance.

The burial sites of such famous figures as the artist Jēkabs Kazaks, the poet Jānis Esenbergis, and the journalist and writer Mārtiņš Lapas are located within the Torņakalns Cemetery. The cemetery is adorned with a variety of monuments and memorials, including:

  • The Blok family's tombstone, erected in 1826 from limestone.
  • The monument to J. Puritis, erected in 1780 from sandstone.
  • The monument to J. Esenbergis, erected in 1890 from granite and bronze.

The cemetery also features decorative metal fences from the 19th and 20th centuries, granite crosses, and obelisks.

The cemetery was closed in 1951 with the intention of converting its grounds into a memorial park, which has not officially opened to this day.

Services of the Tornakalna and Tornakalna Orthodox Cemeteries

These necropolises do not have free space for the allocation of new plots; they are closed. Only reburials with urns are permitted within the cemetery grounds within plots containing existing graves of deceased relatives.

Plots for reburials in such plots are provided free of charge. However, when preparing a family burial, it may be necessary to dismantle, at least partially, existing grave structures. They are then reinstalled after the burial. The work required for this is paid for.

The cost of the service is determined according to the amount of labor involved and the complexity of the conditions.

How to obtain a plot at the cemeteries on Torňakalna Street

Family burials with urns are permitted at these cemeteries. There are no sanitary deadlines for urn burials, so the burial can be carried out at any time after the previous funeral.

Obtaining a burial permit

Family burials with urns are permitted at the cemeteries. To do this, you must provide the administration of the Torňakalna Street cemeteries with documents proving the degree of relationship (birth certificate, marriage certificate, etc.) and a death certificate. The administration will then issue a burial permit, which allows the funeral to take place.
