Miķela Cemetery in Riga

The St. Michael's Cemetery in Riga, founded in 1874, initially had a Catholic and Polish orientation. Today, the civil authorities classify the former Garrison, Ascension, and Muslim Cemeteries as part of the St. Michael's Cemetery.

The Garrison Cemetery was established in the 1880s, starting from the Markus Cemetery, and over time it merged with the St. Michael's Cemetery.

The Muslim Cemetery, established in 1890, is still used for Muslim burials in accordance with religious rites. Instead of a cross, the tombstones feature the Islamic symbol – the crescent moon. This cemetery also eventually became part of the St. Michael's Cemetery.
