Rainis Cemetery in Riga

Rainis Cemetery, originally known as the New Riga Cemetery, was officially opened in 1929 under its current name after Rainis was buried there.

Since 1925, burials of people not affiliated with any religious community began to take place here, leading to the unofficial names "the atheist cemetery" or "the pagan cemetery."

In 1935, a monument was erected at Rainis's grave, and in 1943, his wife Aspazija was buried next to him.

After World War II, it was primarily used for the burial of cultural figures, scientists, military personnel, members of the Communist Party, and Soviet officials.

In the central part of the cemetery is Rainis's grave—a monument-sculpture by Kārlis Zemdegs, designed by architect P. Arends. Nearby are the remains of famous writers and poets: Aspazija, Žan Griva, Mirdza Kempe, Jāns Sudrabkalns, Aleksandrs Čaks, Klavs Elsbergs, Kārlis Kruza, Dora Stučka, and Augusts Apsītis. The grounds also contain a mass grave of Soviet underground fighters and numerous individual graves of Red and Soviet Army soldiers, partisans, and members of the Communist Party of Latvia, as well as their family members. Heroes of the Soviet Union Pyotr Zubov, Georgy Isakov, Viktor Komarov, Aleksey Makhrov, Sergey Kostritsky, Imants Sudmalis, Otomārs Oškalns, Konstantins Shkaruba, and the Soviet military leader Artūrs Sprogis are also buried here.
