2nd Lesnoye Cemetery in Riga

The Forest Cemetery in Riga consists of two parts: the 1st Forest Cemetery (Aizsaules Street 2) and the 2nd Forest Cemetery (Gaujas Street 12), covering a total area of approximately 85.5 hectares. In 1975, the cemetery was partially closed to new burials.

The idea for this cemetery arose in 1910, and based on this decision, an area of 85.5 hectares was allocated. The land was divided among seven Riga parishes, including the Latvian and German churches of St. Gertrude, St. John, Jesus, St. James, the Reformed Church, St. Peter's Church, and the Dome Church. The cemetery was officially consecrated on July 19, 1913.

The Forest Cemetery design was developed by landscape architect Georg Kufaldt, who was inspired by German cemeteries of the time. The cemetery is designed as a landscaped park with a central avenue and numerous winding paths for burials, low fences, and modest monuments. From the beginning, it was established that any landscaping and monument installation must be approved by the city parks department.
